UNN Router Onboarding Setup Guide

This guide will help you set up your new router for use on the UNN network. To setup arcade cabinets, follow the appropriate additional guides.

Warning

Read this entire guide, including warnings and notes, before starting any work or making any purchase

What you’ll need

  • An OpenWRT compatible router
  • An internet connection

Note: Router Selection

A list of currently supported routers, along with firmware downloads can be found at https://op.wacca.rip/firmware

If a router is not listed here, but is listed on the OpenWRT website as being compatible with 23.05.0, please get in touch before buying it to avoid disapointment.

Steps

  1. Every router must be registered with the UNN network team. Please send a photo of the sticker on your router, with all information clearly visible.
  2. Install the provided firmware onto your router. Every manufacturer has a slightly different interface on their router, but generally you will be performing a “Firmware Update”. If it warns that this is not first party firmware, continue regardless.
  3. Once the firmware has been installed, connect the router to the internet.
  4. It will automatically provision once it has been registered on the UNN network.

To initially connect your router to the internet, it is strongly recommended to directly wire to the WAN port. If your router has a USB port, you can alternatively perform USB tethering from a mobile phone. Finally, you can make a hotspot on your phone named ALLNET_RECOVERY with the password as ALLNET_RECOVERY and the router will automatically connect.

After provisioning, if your router was connected via the WAN port you have nothing to do. If you instead wish to connect the router to WiFi, follow Configuring your router.

Danger

Place your UNN router somewhere guest cannot access it. Within the locked compartment of a cabinet is recommended, however suspended from rafters, in a network cabinet, or other similar inaccesible places are also good.

Note

While it’s temping to plug your router into a USB port somewhere, please don’t. A dedicated power supply should be used otherwise you will run into unpredictable issues.

Configuring your Router

UNN routers are designed to need minimal configuration from arcade operators. If you wish to connect to WiFi, however, you will need to provide the password.

To connect to your router’s web interface, connect a laptop or PC to the LAN port of the router, then navigate to http://tenporouter.loc in a browser. By default the router is running a hidden WiFi network for diagnostics, the credentials of which will be displayed on the web interface. You can alternatively connect the router to store WiFi.

Note

It is strongly recommended to run a wire to your UNN router, rather than use WiFi. If you really must use WiFi, ensure the signal strength is good and place the router somewhere unobstructed (eg not in a metal box). We may contact you if your router is identified as having a particularly poor connection.
